Tip-Off Timer: Five Titles Should Put Rodman in Hall of Fame |
Posted Oct 22, 2009 12:00PM By Tim Povtak at http://nba.fanhouse.com
Tip-Off Timer counts down the days until the first game of the 2009-10 season. On Thursday, there are 5 days remaining.
It takes five years of retirement for a player to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Make it 10 for Dennis Rodman, who always did things differently. He did win five NBA titles.
If you think that Michael Jordan caused a commotion with an unconventional acceptance speech last month when he headlined the Class of 2009, just wait until Rodman shows up in 2010 wearing a dress and lipstick.
Think of the theater. Think of the much-deserved attention it will bring to the greatest names in basketball history. Think of the fun.
Eligible for the first time now – those who have served their five years away – are Karl Malone, Scottie Pippen and Mark Jackson among others.
Malone, the second leading scorer in basketball history with 36,928 points, will join former Utah Jazz teammate John Stockton, who was inducted this year along with their coach, Jerry Sloan. Stockton and Malone formed one of the best tandems the game ever has seen.
Because Malone stayed in the game a year longer, trying unsuccessfully to chase a championship with the Lakers at age 41, he likely will enter the Hall a year behind his assist man.
Pippen, sidekick to Jordan through six NBA titles in Chicago, also is expected to follow his teammate by a year. Unlike Stockton and Malone, there was a clear distinction between the talents of another one of the league's finest dynamic duos.
Pippen, one of the most versatile players in basketball, may have benefited from Jordan's presence, but it also overshadowed his own greatness. He was an eight-time All-Defensive first-team selection, playing Robin to Jordan's Batman in Chicago.
Jackson didn't get the attention of Malone or Pippen, but he also left his mark on the game. He played for seven teams during a 17-year career, recording 10,334 assists, second most in NBA history behind Stockton.
After Jackson, though, the potential candidates in their first year of eligibility are thin. There is Charles Oakley, who played 14 years and collected more than 12,000 rebounds; Horace Grant, who won four NBA titles; and Avery Johnson, the point guard who won a title in San Antonio.
Which brings us back to Rodman, whose absence is as glaring as anyone not in the Hall of Fame today. Easily the best non-center rebounder in history, he won seven consecutive rebounding titles, most by wide margins.
He also was named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year twice. Added to his five NBA titles, and – based on his basketball accomplishments -- it's almost impossible to deny him the honor.
Maybe it's time to look past his often zany, sometimes bizarre behavior, and focus on the way he played the game – with a passion that produced championships.

Rodman Hosts Annual Corpus Christi Best of the Best Showcase |
The 2009 Best of the Best Showcase featured one of the best basketball players of all time on Sunday, October 18, 2009. Prince Marketing Group’s Dennis Rodman, who led the NBA in rebounds for a record-setting seven consecutive seasons, was the celebrity guest at Sunday’s Showcase at the American Bank Center Convention Center. Free merchandise, live music and snacks were just some of the perks from Sunday’s 13th annual Caller-Times Best of the Best Showcase. Ronney Heslip, a Hamlin Middle School coach and art teacher, walked away with a memento that he will always cherish thanks to Rodman. The former NBA player and reality TV star autographed a watercolor portrait of himself, Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen that Heslip created. “Everybody’s a Jordan fan,” Heslip said, “but I’m a Rodman fan. ... You just didn’t know what he was going to do (on the court).” Heslip, who watched Rodman play since the late ’80s, said he painted the portrait more than 10 years ago following Rodman’s 1998 NBA championship with the Chicago Bulls. He said meeting Rodman and getting his autograph was one of his favorite moments. “I let him know where my loyalties lie,” Heslip said. “He’s on the painting twice.” Heslip was one of more than 10,000 people who attended the annual event. The annual showcase, which began in 1997, featured more than 100 vendors in 180 categories vying for Best of the Best award. The event has since drawn more than 120,000 people from across the Coastal Bend. Attendees made their way through the exhibit hall collecting information about businesses in the Coastal Bend. Many, such as Saul Oriz Sr., stood in line for more than an hour to meet Rodman, his all-time favorite basketball player. “I’m a basketball fan because of Rodman,” Ortiz said. “He’s the all-time greatest defensive player and rebounder.” |

Rodman can only be a help for Bulldogs |
By Brian Fees Sports Editor
Original Article It seems like one of the most absurd ideas there is. One of the biggest bad boys in NBA history, a player who gave plenty of coaches their share of grey hairs, now wants to become, of all things, a head coach. Sure, Dennis Rodman is only going to be coaching the Elmira Bulldogs for two games. Sure, it’s a publicity stunt to help draw interest in the young professional team. But the thing is, it’s a genius idea. Love him or hate him, one thing is certain — Dennis Rodman is a well-known basketball player. Very few players are as recognizable outside of the game, as evidenced by his stint on national television as part of the Celebrity Apprentice this year. He will bring fans to the arena; whether it’s to watch the game or just to see what Dennis Rodman is going to do on the sideline, people who may not have even known the Bulldogs existed will be in the stands. And Rodman as a coach may not be the end of what the Bulldogs will do in the future to try and bring in crowds. "If the community supports this we will look to bring in more big names in the future," Bulldogs coach and general manager James Schutz said. "We may look to do this every year." Last year the Bulldogs played their games at the Chemung County YMCA and they had plenty of success, reaching the Eastern Basketball Alliance finals. |

The Worm played two games against a Chinese professional team and finished with one victory and one defeat. Both games were sell outs and the fans were treated to a great show. While in China, Rodman also visited some of the cities in Jinjiang and participated in some autograph sessions. The Chinese are big basketball fans and love the NBA. |
Over the last several months, Scottie Pippen, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Isiah Thomas and the New York Times have expressed their opinion that Dennis Rodman belongs in the NBA Hall of Fame upon reaching eligibility. AOL's Fanhouse reasons that "he belongs in, and I don't think it's even close." They provide the following statistics to support their claim: 5 NBA championships, 2-time All-Star, 2-time Defensive Player of the Year, 7-time NBA 1st team All-Defensive Team, 10th All-Time in NBA history in rebounds per game, 33rd in NBA history in all-time Field Goal percentage, led the NBA six times in offensive rebounds, three times in defensive rebounds, all-time leader in NBA history in Rebound Rate (the percentage of missed shots rebounded while a player was on the floor, kept since 1971) with 23.44. The greatest athlete according to Phil Jackson |
By Janis Carr - The greatest athlete according to Phil Jackson After receiving an honorary doctor of letters degree from his alma mater, University of North Dakota, Lakers coach Phil Jackson touched upon a range of subjects from the school’s nickname to the greatest athlete he has ever coached. And it wasn’t Michael Jordan. Or Kobe Bryant. Or Shaquille O’Neal. Not Karl Malone, Derek Fisher, Rick Fox, Scottie Pippen, Steve Kerr, Bill Cartwright or Smush Parker (OK, so he might not belong). No, the player Jackson called the greatest that he has coached is that wedding dress aficionado and Newport Beach police’s favorite basketball bad boy, Dennis Rodman. That’s right. No need to rub your eyes. “He could probably play a 48-minute game and play the 48th minute stronger than the first minute of the game,” Jackson told the crowd at UND. “He was that terrific an athlete.” Jackson credited Madonna for helping Rodman overcome his “shy” personality. “Madonna saw what was in there and wanted him . . . to do what she does: be outrageous, and kind of talked him into opening up his character,” Jackson said. “And Dennis didn’t know how many ways he could open up his character.” |

Rodman Falls to the Harlem Globetrotters In Las Vegas |

LAS VEGAS, N.V. - History was made at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on Feb. 17, as for the first time ever, the Harlem Globetrotters battled Dennis Rodman’s Bad Boy All-Stars. The Globetrotters proved too much for Rodman’s crew, as Willie Shaw’s 22 points led the Globetrotters to a 64-44 victory. Gordon Malone chipped in with 18 points for the Globetrotters. The challenge was presented to the Globetrotters by Rodman during a December press conference at the Orleans Arena, in which Globetrotter Chairman Mannie Jackson stated that the goal was to “show Dennis and basketball fans how much fun the game can be and how the game should be played.” Rodman, who won five NBA Championships and two Defensive Player of the Year awards, and led the NBA in rebounds a record seven consecutive years, played 30 minutes in the game and grabbed eight rebounds, had three assists and did not score. Known for his outrageous antics both on and off the court during his NBA career, he credits his agent Darren Prince, CEO of Prince Marketing Group for securing the deal and keeping his post-NBA marketing image relevant. |
